Manolo. As Xubias, A Coruña, Spain.
Manolo’s grandparents met in Argentina, two Galicians a long way from home. Then they won the lottery in Uruguay, and spent it on the way back: a ticket home, and a tavern facing the sea. That was 1919. A year later their daughter Teresa was born.
The neighbourhood called her A Toquera. "A toca" meant under shelter, and the tavern sat out of reach of the old north-east winds.
Her son Manolo was born a few doors down, in 1954. Forty years ago, when the tavern was fading, he and his sister brought it back to life. Today it is said to be the oldest bar in A Coruña. Home cooking, the ría below, Santa Cristina across the water.
Some places are special, and this is one of a kind, like Manolo.
