A Serea, meaning “the siren” in Galician, is a bronze sculpture of a mythological figure standing on the site of the former Berbiriana beach in A Coruña, Spain. Sirens are a symbol of identity across Celtic cultures, from Ireland and Scotland to Wales, Brittany and Galicia. They embody the duality of the Atlantic that surrounds these lands, with its magnetic beauty and its lethal danger. Legend tells of a young woman who drowned in the waters of Orzán Bay. Days later, the ocean returned her to the shores of Berbiriana, now known as Matadero, transformed into a hybrid being carrying within her an ancient, fierce feminine power. From her place by the sea, with one arm raised towards the sun, she celebrates the beauty of the ocean and the light that disappears beyond the horizon each evening. Yet she also reminds us of the dangers of this coast, the same Atlantic that gave the Costa da Morte its name.
In her hand, an Estrella Galicia, raised towards the fading sun as if in a toast to the sea, to the city, and to all the sirens still to come. Spirits of nature, daughters of the sea, and echoes of the Otherworld.
